This summer, an opera-guest performance with fresh views and still classic values is coming to the main stage of the Szeged Outdoor Games: the great production of the Csokonai National Theatre Debrecen, the immortal masterpiece of Georges Bizet, the Carmen, which was staged by the Kossuth Prize winner Tamás Juronics. The director chose a special, innovative approach: the story unfolds in a mystical, Mexican milieu during the Day Carnival of the Dead, where passion and destiny get even sharper contours. The opera based on Henri Meilhac's and Ludovic Halévy's libretto of Prosper Mérimée focuses on a fateful female existence. Carmen does not simply become the person who is the embodied freedom and sensuality by his choices. A beautiful gypsy girl who was born with demonic charm and instinctively, masterfully uses her weapon: her femininity. Women who are easily passionate about them want to break out of the world of soldiers who are preying on them and bullfighters looking for fame, defiance and retortion. Their passionate, but destructive relationship with Don José is fulfilled in the relentless duality of affection and repulsion: each other's love becomes their undoing.
The visual world is fascinating and daring: the Jászai Mari Prize winner, worthy artist Erkel László Centaur sets and costumes show the almost mythical story in new colors. The daily atmosphere of the Mexican dead, the encounter of the colorful carnival elements and the traditional opera form offers a special, exciting experience and is worthy to show a new face on the largest outdoor stage in our country. This Carmen talks about passion, freedom and destiny, both modern and traditional, spectacular and provocative, deeply human and elemental. This summer, the audience of the Szeged Outdoor Games will have an unforgettable opera experience.
